Abstract

Electronic cigarettes are very popular in today’s culture. Electronic nicotine delivery systems (e-cigarettes or vapes) are an alternative to traditional cigarettes. These electronic cigarettes are typically filled with glycerol or propylene glycol-based solutions known as e-liquids. This phenomenon has attracted the interest of many, especially impressionable teenagers. Vaping is said to be a ‘less dangerous’ alternative to the traditional nicotine consumption. However, these devices have proven to be as dangerous, if not more, than conventional cigarettes.

Similar to the negative consequences of traditional cigarettes, e-cigs have many health-risks. Vaping has been found to produce Acrolein, which is known to cause lung cancer over time. In addition, a study conducted in 2018, 37.8 percent of seniors in high school were reported to be influenced by vaping [19]. Research has speculated that vaping is the cause of increase cancer cases in teens, though there is no conclusive evidence of this to be factual. Research also speculates that the use of electronic cigarettes can dramatically increase the change of a heart attack due to the extra strain that is placed on the heart [1]. I will examine the data bases of premed and Galileo to compile information and studies to support these claims. This brief review summarizes what harmful effects vaping may cause and the affects it can have the teen populations.
