Abstract

Abstract: In the United States, the percentage of children and adolescents affected by obesity has more than tripled since the 1970s. The purpose of this literature review is to provide information on teaching elementary students how to prevent them from the point of obesity in addition to providing statistics on the current state of overweight children. Childhood obesity prevention efforts should be targeted to ages before obesity onset. Many factors, including programs in the school and household habits contribute to how much a child may weigh at an early age. Diet, race, and lack of physical activity all play a role on whether a child will fall into the category of being overweight or obese. When joined, teachers and parents can teach their children how to prevent being obese at a young age which could cause more health problems for them at an older age.
